David Céspedes, longevity expert: “Leave green avocados out of the refrigerator” except in these circumstances

More than 11 million viewers have weighed in after a viral video challenged how Americans store everyday produce.

Update:

Nutrition plays a central role in how the body functions and performs. It is the fuel that allows us to operate day after day, and depending on the quality and suitability of the foods we choose, our system will respond accordingly.

In that context, David Céspedes, a longevity specialist and social media content creator, shared a short video on TikTok explaining how best to store a range of fruits and vegetables, whether by keeping them out of the refrigerator or placing them inside.

Which fruits and vegetables belong in the fridge?

The health professional recommends keeping tomatoes and onions out of the fridge, with one exception. If an onion has been cut, it is better stored inside the appliance. Garlic and potatoes are next on his list, and Céspedes advises that both should remain outside the refrigerator.

Continuing with his recommendations, the longevity expert says bananas and apples are better preserved out of the fridge, although he adds a caveat. “If you want apples to last longer, better inside,” he notes.

Céspedes then turns his attention to avocados. “Leave green avocados out of the fridge. If they are ripe or opened, inside,” he explains.

To wrap up, he sends cherries, unwashed strawberries, salad greens and eggs into the refrigerator.

Millions watch, and many disagree

The video, which racked up more than 11 million views within hours, along with 400,000 likes and roughly 3,000 comments, has drawn significant attention. Many users have pushed back against Céspedes’ advice.

“The tomato, if you want it to last longer, belongs in the fridge.” “Eggs have to go outside, in supermarkets they are always kept out.” “Potatoes and onions keep better in the fridge.” “Well, potatoes last much longer inside the fridge.” These are just some of the many reactions posted under the video.

The debate highlights how even everyday kitchen habits can divide opinion, especially when amplified by social media.
