Delcy Rodríguez demands immediate proof of life for Nicolás Maduro from the United States

In the wake of overnight US attacks, Venezuela is facing an extremely volatile situation. According to Donald Trump, the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro has been captured by the United States, though the US President provided no further details.

The whereabouts of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who was also detained, remain unknown. That was confirmed by Venezuela’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, who, under the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic, now assumes power.

Rodríguez said she does not know where the president or the first lady are being held. In a phone interview with the state broadcaster Venezolana de Televisión, she demanded that the United States provide immediate proof of life for both Maduro and Flores.

“They have attacked us, but they will not break us.”

Venezuela’s defense minister, Vladimir Padrino López, for his part, denounced what he said was a U.S. attack on Caracas that triggered explosions in the capital and other cities across the country. He said authorities were searching for possible injuries or fatalities.

“This invasion represents the greatest affront the country has suffered, driven by an insatiable greed for our strategic resources,” Padrino López said in a video shared on social media.

He also described the attack as “vile and cowardly” and called for calm to prevent “chaos and anarchy.” “They are just as lethal as bombs,” he added, before warning: “They have attacked us, but they will not break us.”
