Donald Trump administration pushes $250 bill with his face, sparking controversy in the U.S.
The U.S. government is seeking to issue a commemorative $250 bill featuring Donald Trump’s portrait ahead of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

President Donald Trump’s administration has taken another step in an initiative that is already generating controversy both inside and outside the United States: the creation of a commemorative $250 bill bearing the president’s image. The proposal, driven by the Treasury Department, is part of preparations for the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
According to reports, officials close to the administration pressured the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to move forward with prototypes of the new bill, despite an existing federal law that prohibits living individuals from appearing on official U.S. currency. The move has reignited debate over the cult of presidential personality and the use of national symbols for political purposes.
U.S. considers $250 bill featuring Trump
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters at a press conference that his department is ready to go with the initiative saying “we prepare things in advance.” However, there is one major problem he acknowledged, “no living person can be on U.S. currency.”
As part of the project, legislation has been proposed in both the House and the Senate according to the secretary. “It’s all up on Capitol Hill,” Bessent said, adding, “we will stick to the law.”
The controversy intensified after reports revealed that Patricia Solimene, then director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, was removed from her position after raising legal and technical objections to the initiative. According to The Washington Post, Solimene warned that producing a new bill requires years of development and formal congressional authorization. “We’re not authorized to do this,” Solimene reportedly said while explaining the existing legal restrictions.
Although the project has not yet received final approval, preliminary designs featuring Trump’s image alongside patriotic imagery and references to the United States Semiquincentennial are already circulating. The proposal joins other initiatives promoted during the current Republican administration, including commemorative coins, official documents, and presidential-themed merchandise.

If you saw this happening in another country, what would you call it?https://t.co/0AoJQDs7Ko
Reactions were swift. While Trump supporters view the measure as a historic tribute, critics argue that it is an attempt to reinforce a personality-driven political narrative from within the government. For now, the debate remains unresolved, and the future of the bill will depend on both Congress and the legal limitations that remain in place in Washington.
