In the United States, the distribution of May’s Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income payments (SSI) begins this Friday.

Each month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues payments to retired workers, survivors, recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and beneficiaries of the SSI scheme.

Different groups of recipients are paid on different schedules. Some beneficiaries receive their money in the first days of the month, while others are paid later on, spread throughout the month. Here’s a breakdown of who will see their payments arrive this week:

Who receives Social Security payments this week?

This Friday, May 1, the SSA is to send payments to SSI recipients, as well as issuing Social Security benefits to individuals who started receiving retirement, SSDI or survivor pay before May 1997.

What’s more, May 1 will also bring a double payment for certain beneficiaries: the 2.5 million Americans who claim SSI and Social Security are scheduled to receive both benefits on Friday.

Why the double payment?

Although SSI and Social Security payments are normally sent on different dates, there are situations where they are issued on the same day. As is the case in May, this occurs when a scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, prompting the SSA to move payments up.

Full payment schedule for May:

  • May 1: SSI; pre-May 1997 Social Security recipients; dual beneficiaries
  • May 13: Social Security beneficiaries born between 1st and 10th
  • May 20: Social Security beneficiaries born between 11th and 20th
  • May 27: Social Security beneficiaries born between 21st and 31st

SSA ditches paper checks

Month after month, Social Security and SSI payments are delivered electronically, either through direct deposit or via the Direct Express debit card.

In the past, payments were also sent by paper check through the mail. However, the SSA last year eliminated this option. Anyone who was still receiving paper checks must change their payment method as soon as possible to continue receiving their benefits.
