Update:

New Yorkers have turned out for early voting in record numbers, ahead of a mayoral election in which Democrat Zohran Mamdani is the frontrunner - but has a narrowing lead, according to a major recent poll.

How many people have voted early in NYC’s mayoral election?

Nearly 750,000 people cast their ballot in early voting for the November 4 election, which will see Mamdani go up against the Republican Party’s Curtis Sliwa and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor.

Having opened on October 25, early voting closed yesterday at 5 p.m. ET. According to figures published by the New York City Board of Elections, 735,317 people voted during the nine-day pre-election voting period.

Per the New York Times, that’s over four times the number of New Yorkers - around 170,000 - who took part in early voting ahead of the 2021’s mayoral election. Four years ago, Democrat Eric Adams defeated Sliwa.

Mamdani lead tightening, per new poll

In the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s election, Mamdani has enjoyed a double-digit lead in numerous polls. Indeed, one survey even gave the 34-year-old a 26-point advantage over Cuomo, the second favorite.

However, an October 30 poll by Atlas Intel shows Cuomo seemingly closing on Mamdani, with the candidates earning 34% and 40.6% of the vote, respectively. Per Atlas’s survey Sliwa’s support stands at 24.1%.

The bookmakers, meanwhile, are strongly backing Mamdani for victory. For example, the betting site Oddschecker gives the Democrat -2000 moneyline odds of becoming New York City’s new mayor, ahead of Cuomo on +600. Sliwa is valued back at +10,000.

When does voting open on November 4?

On Election Day 2025, poll sites are scheduled to open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. If you’re not sure where your poll site is, you can find out using this search tool on the Board of Elections website.

If you’re voting by mail, the Board of Elections says it can receive your ballot up to seven days after November 4, as long as it is postmarked by Election Day.
