Elon Musk’s private visit to Pope Francis with a confession about the future: “Technology will save us”

In July 2022, the worlds of religion and technology came together at the Vatican, where Pope Francis received Elon Musk, along with several of his children, for a private 40-minute meeting at his residence, Casa Santa Marta. This meeting was not on the official agenda but was a private visit, one of many that Pope Francis had during his papacy with various personalities.

The pontiff and the head of Tesla and the rocket company SpaceX discussed general topics and exchanged views on the future of humanity and technology, as well as shared perspectives on the so-called “demographic winter,” analyzing the low birth rates in many countries and the need for regulations in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Additionally, it was noted that new technologies, how to reduce global warming through the use of renewable energy, and the will to work against the risk of natural disasters were also part of the debate.

For the Pope, renewable energies “can make a difference in the fight against climate change through a strong sense of community and love for the land itself,” as he wrote in his encyclical, Laudato Si’.

Furthermore, the Pope seemed surprised that the magnate believed in the future of humanity, and this pleased Francis. “Technology will save the world,” Musk recalled several times, and hours later, he shared a photo of the personal meeting: “It is an honor to have met the Pontiff.”
