Update:

A small village in Finland has seen an upturn in Chinese residents who are looking to adapt to the northern European way of life. Espoo, on Finland’s south coast, is home to more than 4,000 Chinese residents which has brought with it a huge surge in the construction of houses.

Koivisto is an architect in the area who has designed plenty of new houses for those who have chosen the area to live. According to him, the houses in question all feature a modern Scandinavian minimalist design, with many wooden surfaces and concrete floors to make them easy to clean.

However, one particular feature stands out: in a typical 300-square-meter house, special emphasis is being placed on the common spaces, leaving no room for the kids: their bedrooms are comparatively tiny compared to the square footage of the house as a whole...

‘It’s better if the children want to be in the living room than their own room'

Xinying Lin is one such resident, who explained herself to The Huffington Post: she wanted relatively tiny bedrooms to encourage children to be more social.

“It would be much better if the children would rather be comfortable in the living room than lying in their own room,” she reasoned, which is why the children’s rooms stand out as being ‘cozy’ in size compared to the rest of the spaces.

While I’m sure the kids aren’t impressed, between the logical reasoning and a surefire bit of Finnish construction, I don’t think I’m in any position to question this; we’ll probably all be doing it in 20 years time.
