Flood warnings remain in effect for Southeast after Tropical Storm Debby: Which states will experience excessive rainfall today, August 7?
After making landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday, Tropical Storm Debby continues to wreak havoc on the southeastern United States. So far, the phenomenon has caused the deaths of six people; four in Florida and two in Georgia, and threatens to cause flooding from an excessive rainfall system.
According to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Debby will continue to cause heavy rains in the southeastern region, as it moves slowly northward, so several areas are still under flood warnings.
Which states and areas will experience excessive rainfall?
Tropical Storm Debby is moving off the coast of South Carolina, where it is expected to make a second landfall on Wednesday night. As it moves inland, the storm poses a “major flooding threat” to parts of North Carolina and Georgia.
“Heavy rainfall across portions of eastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina is expected to persist through Thursday, expanding areas of significant flooding. The expected heavy rainfall will result in significant flooding impacts from the Carolina Piedmont, parts of the Mid-Atlantic states, and Vermont through Saturday morning,” the NHC warned via social media.
Debby is currently with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph; however, the NHC warns that it could strengthen before making landfall on the South Carolina coast. However, weakening is expected by Thursday, “after the center moves inland.”
Heavy rains for the weekend
The severe weather is expected to continue through Saturday. According to the projected track, Tropical Storm Debby could move toward central North Carolina, move through Virginia, and reach the Washington area on August 10.
“From the South Carolina Piedmont northward through parts of Virginia, 3 to 7 inches, with local amounts up to 10 inches, are expected through Friday,” officials warned. “This rainfall will likely result in areas of significant flash and urban flooding, with possible river flooding.”
From Maryland to northern New York and Vermont, up to 6 inches of rain is expected by Saturday morning, which could lead to flash flooding. For more information and real-time updates, visit the NHC website.
