Flying in the U.S. in 2025? New ID deadline and rules explained
Travelers will soon need official identification to take internal flights within the United States.

Domestic travel is about to change as American travelers will need a new identification document, known as REAL ID in order to take a flight within the United States from May.
When traveling within the US, travellers must present a REAL ID-compliant license or ID. This means that the license or card must include the star mark that signifies that the ID is REAL ID-compliant. Another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, will also be accepted at airports.
REAL ID start date in US
“Beginning May 7, 2025, all residents of states and territories will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant license or ID, or another acceptable form of identification,to access federal facilities, enter nuclear power plants, and board commercial aircraft,” states the official REAL ID website of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

DHS specifies that your ID card itself must comply with REAL ID regulations unless the resident uses an acceptable alternative document, such as a passport. Cards that comply with REAL ID requirements have a star mark at the top.
Enhanced driver licenses (EDLs) issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont are also considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards.
Beginning May 7, 2025, travelers who do not present a REAL ID-compliant license or card or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport, will not be permitted through security checkpoints. For international travel, travelers must have a passport and visa, if required by the destination country.
How to obtain a REAL ID card?
We recommend visiting your state’s driver’s license agency website to find out exactly what documentation is required to obtain a REAL ID. Some of the documents may include proof of: full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, two proofs of primary residence address, and proof of legal status if you have a Green Card or work permit.
