Goodbye Trump: President-elect gets cropped out of Kamala Harris' Instagram post

Online commentators have had mixed reactions to the picture posted by Kamala Harris from the Carter funeral, focusing on the absence of Donald Trump.

Vice President Kamala Harris posted a photo to her Instagram featuring most living presidents and vice presidents gathered during the late President Jimmy Carter’s funeral last week. The photo prominently includes the vice president, the second gentleman, President Biden, and the first lady, as well as former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and former Vice Presidents Al Gore and Mike Pence. However, one notable figure is missing from the image: President-elect Donald Trump, whom many online claim was intentionally cropped out of the photo shared by Harris’ team.

In the post dedicated to the centenarian former presidnet, who endorsed her candidacy for president, Harris spoke to the impact Carter made during his time in the White House and after. “He lived his faith, served the people, and left the world better than he found it,” said the vice president, adding that his “contributions will echo for generations to come.”

Was the crop intentional?

The funeral marked the first occasion where President-elect Trump and the vice president came face to face. Based on videos and photos from the event, their relationship appears cold—especially compared to other leaders present, such as former President Obama, who was seen joking around with Trump. When asked about these interactions, the president-elect acknowledged that he got along well with President Obama despite years of criticism. He noted that he had pleasant conversations with the other former presidents in attendance.

The answer to this question depends on how one defines “intentional.” Did Harris' team deliberately choose a photo that excluded Donald and Melania Trump? Perhaps, but that is different from actively manipulating the image to exclude the president-elect. It does not appear that the vice president’s team altered the photo before uploading it to social media. More likely, the image was simply taken from an angle that excluded the Trumps.
