How does Spotify’s new AI powered DJ work?
The world’s most popular music app has released a new feature that promises to bring a new level of personalisation to your listening.
Remaining on top of the competition requires constant innovation, or at least the semblance of innovation. Spotify believes it has done enough to keep ahead of competitors like Apple Music with the introduction of DJ. No, this isn’t the automatic music mixing electronic music fans might dream of, but a foray into the application of AI and music.
A communiqué from the company explained that the AI is a “guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you. This feature, first rolling out in beta, will deliver a curated lineup of music alongside commentary around the tracks and artists we think you’ll like in a stunningly realistic voice.”
So if you wanted the opportunity to have your music selections disrupted by an AI voice then it sounds like this feature is for you.
The company says the AI will analyse your previous songs to find a sort of pattern of songs you might like, as well as dragging some long, lost tracks back from the depths of your music past. Think of it like the ‘Discover Weekly’ playlist that Spotify creates for you each Friday, but with greater specificity.
The more you use the app, the closer in tune it will get to your style. It uses OpenAI technology.
Users outside of the US and Canada will have to wait a bit longer for the AI addition.
