Donald Trump recently made some controversial statements regarding NATO, saying he would encourage Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to NATO allies who do not spend enough on defense to meet budget contribution goals.

His most recent pronouncements have brought new focus on his past comments regarding the alliance. During his term as president from 2017 to 2021, he often criticized the organization and some of its members. Trump also questioned the collective defense principle, which posits that an attack on one NATO member is an attack on all its allies.

According to CNN’s Jim Sciutto, several former advisers of the ex-president have warned that Trump will try to pull the US out of NATO if he manages to return to the White House.

How long has the US been a member of NATO?

The United States has been a part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization since the alliance was created. NATO was established in 1949 with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, D.C.

The US, along with 12 other founding member countries from Europe and North America, signed the treaty to establish a collective defense alliance against the threat of aggression from the Soviet Union and its allies during the Cold War.

Since then, the United States has remained an active member of NATO, playing a significant role in the alliance’s activities, operations, and decision-making processes.

NATO has evolved over the years to address new security challenges and threats, and the US has continued to reaffirm its commitment to the organization’s principles of collective defense, democracy, and security cooperation with its European allies.

The organization comes to its decisions by consensus, but the strength that the US wields globally ensures its position as the most powerful country in NATO.
