Update:

Erin has become the first hurricane of the season. The storm reached Category 5 strength on Saturday, August 16, before weakening to Category 3 by Sunday, with maximum sustained winds of up to 125 miles per hour (mph). Still, forecasters warn that Erin could regain intensity in the coming days and remain a “dangerous hurricane” through midweek.

“We are facing a major hurricane. Its intensity is fluctuating, but in any case, it remains dangerous,” said Richard Pasch of the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Authorities are urging residents of the central Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina to stay alert to Erin’s path.

How many hurricanes are expected in 2025?

Erin is only the first in a series of hurricanes projected by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). According to the agency, 2025 is expected to bring an above-average number of hurricanes—but what does that actually mean? Let’s break it down.

In a typical season, there are about seven hurricanes, three of which are considered major (Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale, which goes up to Category 5). For 2025, NOAA forecasts between 13 and 18 named storms, of which 5 to 9 are likely to become hurricanes, including 2 to 5 major hurricanes.

These are the hurricane categories, according to their wind speeds:

  • Category 1: 74-95 mph (miles per hour)
  • Category 2: 96-110 mph
  • Category 3: 111-129 mph
  • Category 4: 130-156 mph
  • Category 5: 157 or more mph

How many storms have we seen so far?

Because of their impact, all hurricanes and storms have a name, established by the World Meteorological Organization. So far, only five storms have been named: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, and Erin, the latter being the only hurricane of the season.

The rest of the names for the approaching storms and hurricanes are:

  • Fernand
  • Gabrielle
  • Humberto
  • Imelda
  • Jerry
  • Karen
