His performance in ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ came after a career in Hollywood that has lasted more than 25 years. A career that started after Farrell rejected his father’s wishes for him to continue playing football.
Farrell was very clear that he wanted to act, and in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he began to make a name for himself in the industry, starring in a stream of films including, ‘The War Zone’ (1999) and ‘Tigerland’ (2000) and ‘Minority Report’ (2002).
Twenty-five years in Hollywood
In the years that followed, Farrell went on to star in films like ‘Intermission’ (2003) and ‘Alexander’ (2004), where he played Alexander the Great in the film directed by Oliver Stone. The actor also played Terry Blaine, in ‘Cassandra’s Dream’ (2007), where he coincided with Woody Allen and Ewan McGregor.
However, he would have to wait until 2008 to win a major award for his work in Hollywood. In 2008, Farrell won the Golden Globe for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, for his performance as Terry Blaine in ‘In Bruges.’ This win allowed the actor to ascend to even greater heights in Hollywood. In 2009, he starred as Scott Cooper in the Oscar-winning film, ‘Crazy Heart.’ A few years later in 2017, he was nominated for another Golden Globe for ‘The Lobster.’
