The White House got its first occupant in 1800 when then-President John Adams moved into the partially completed residence whose construction had begun eight years prior. Since then, the ‘President’s House’ has been called home by every subsequent US president and their families.

Over the past 225 years, the Executive Residence has undergone several renovations and changes, now consisting of 6 levels that contain 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms. The central building, the most recognizable part of the White House, is located between the East Wing and West Wing of the Executive Mansion and is where the first family’s private quarters are located.

The Trumps will take up residence primarily in the four floors of the Executive Residence once again after the inauguration on January 20. These are the ground floor, state floor and the second and third floors. The sub-basement and mezzanine are used for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and mechanical systems as well as storage and service areas.

The first family private living quarters are located on the second floor of the White House. The western half contains the President’s Bedroom and the President’s Dining Room along with a kitchen and family rooms. The Trumps have free reign to redecorate and renovate this space of the White House.

The other half of the second floor contains seven historic rooms including the Lincoln Bedroom, the Lincoln Sitting Room, the Queens' Bedroom, the Queens' Sitting Room, the East Sitting Hall, the Treaty Room and the Yellow Oval Room. The Truman Balcony can be accessed from the latter two rooms as well as the Private Sitting Room off of the President’s Bedroom.

You can take a virtual tour of the ‘People’s House’ using the White House Historical Association’s White House Experience app.
