The tax season has officially started in the United States. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will begin accepting and processing tax returns for the fiscal year 2023 from January 29 onwards. Millions of taxpayers nationwide will be filing their tax returns in the coming months, with a deadline of April 15 to submit their declarations. Those looking for an extension can apply for one for free, and that will push their filing deadline back to 15 October.

Once taxpayers have filed their returns, the IRS will process them and calculate the amount of any refund owed. The quicker the process is completed, the faster taxpayers can receive their refund.

Tracking and receiving your return

Taxpayers who file their tax return electronically and request a direct deposit can expect their tax refund within 21 days after the IRS processes their return. However, for those who file a paper return and choose to receive a paper check, the wait time could be between 6 and 12 weeks. To speed up the process, the IRS encourages taxpayers to file electronically and choose direct deposit. It’s essential to provide accurate information, as any errors can cause delays because the IRS will send back your return and ask that you make corrections and resubmit it. Taking a look at the most common mistakes can help you avoid this situation. Returns with tax credits or deductions may take even longer to process.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has launched a tool called “Where’s My Refund?” which provides greater transparency to taxpayers. This tool is also available in Spanish as “¿Dónde está mi reembolso?”

The tool allows taxpayers to track and monitor the status of their refunds twenty-four hours after their return has been submitted electronically.
