Is McDonald’s still reigning supreme? Top 10 of French fries brings surprises according to latest consumer study
Jumping online to check out restaurant reviews can help when visiting an unfamiliar place, but sites like Yelp also help reveal who has the best Fries.
When you think of fast food restaurants and French fries, one of the first places that probably pops into your head is McDonald’s. The Golden Arches has long been at the top of the list as best in the business for its crispy taters.
However, in a recent analysis of what customers are saying on Yelp about fries conducted by Seating Masters, McDonald’s has been dethroned. Furthermore, it was sent to near the bottom of the list among 21 fast food chains.
Top 10 of French fries in the United States
While the likes of McDonald’s and Burger King have international reach and recognition, most of those who made the cut for frying up the tastiest fried spuds in the top ten were regional favorites according to WWLP.
In-N-Out came in at number one, with an average ranking of 3.86 out of 5. The fast food chain, whose locations are primarily in the Southwest and West Coast, is known for “using fresh, simple ingredients.”
If you don’t like In-N-Out fries, just say you have the tastebuds of a child who only enjoys frozen processed food.

It’s hamburgers were also recently ranked the best in another review, this time by Yelp itself. “Fans rave about the friendly service, and the nostalgic drive-thru experience,” said the online crowd-source reviewing platform.
Shake Shack, which came in third for the best hamburgers in the United States, came in at number two on Seating Masters’ analysis of best Frech fries. The burger joint that started in 2001 as a small hot dog stand operating out of Madison Square Park in New York City has now spread nationwide.

- Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers: 3.59
- Bojangles: 3.51
- Chick-fil-A: 3.4
- Raising Cane’s: 3.24
- Zaxby’s: 2.98
- Arby’s: 2.89
- Hardee’s: 2.86
- Checkers/Rally’s: 2.84
Down at the bottom of the list was KFC earning on average just 1.77 out of 5. McDonald’s shockingly came in second-to-last with an average ranking of 1.91 and was barely beat out by Burger King which garnered 1.92 on average.
