Founded in 1656, the Florida city of Saint Augustine has been named as the friendliest city in the United States, beating neighbours Malibu and Tampa in a hotly-contested race.

Booking.com named the city top of the list after compiling data shared with Travel + Leisure. To make the rankings, Booking.com more than 360 million verified customer reviews were taken into account.

“The U.S. is such a diverse country that has so much to offer travelers, and we’re thrilled to see destinations like Saint Augustine recognized in the global list for their exceptional hospitality. St. Augustine has always been known for its historic charm, and now travelers will also come to know it for its welcoming environment and excellent accommodations”, Ben Harrell, the managing director for the U.S. at Booking.com, told Travel + Leisure.

Huge beaches with white sand make the picturesque region a top tourist spot, with high-end hotels plentiful and the Old Town Trolley ready to take you on a journey around the town.

The 17th century fortress, the city’s lighthouse and the famous ghost tour are all top attractions for those paying a visit, not to mention the friendliest dwellers.

For those interested in the history of the city, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the entire United States.
