Minneapolis woman to receive $600,000 settlement for abuse of police authority
George Floyd was not Derek Shauvin’s only victim, as shown by the settlement with a former city worker who accused the former officer of excessive force.

Four months before former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd, he was accused of detaining a woman and pinning her to the ground under his knee. These events took place in January 2020, and late last week, the City Council declared that Chauvin had used extensive force and awarded the woman a $600,000 settlement.
Patty Day, the woman at the center of the case, was a former public worker in the Public Works Department. In 2024, Day filed a lawsuit against the Minneapolis Police Department, accusing Chauvin and his partner on the evening of January 17, 2020, Ellen Jensen of excessive force and wrongful arrest.

Details on Day’s settlement
In the end, the court decided that Day’s claim was valid and a total of $175,000 would be paid to her while the remainder would be paid to her legal team. When Day brought the lawsuit, she sued the city for more than $9 million. The case highlights how even when citizens are breaking the law, as Day admitted to drinking while driving, police officers do not have the right to break the law. A courtroom decides who is innocent and guilty, not the police responding to an incident or at the scene of a traffic stop.
Since the police assassination of George Floyd, which sparked massive national and international protests in the summer of 2020, Minneapolis has paid out over $36 million in settlement, the largest worth $27 million, to the Floyd Family.
