Neither Alaska nor Montana, the town in New York State named the moose capital of the United States
A small town in New York State has earned a surprising title, drawing wildlife enthusiasts from across the country.

Did you know the moose is the largest land mammal in New York? Despite standing an average of feet tall at the shoulder, for a male, and weighing up to 1,400 pounds, these mighty mammals are fairly elusive, but there are more than you might expect right here in New York State. Note that not only are they the largest land mammal in New York, they are also the largest member of the deer family.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) estimates there are between 600 and 700 of the regal ruminants in the Adirondack region. Occasionally, they wander farther south, showing up in places like the Hudson Valley or even Long Island.
There’s a moose loose about this house
These forest behemoths are active year-round, particularly at dawn and dusk, and their diet consists mostly of leaves, shoots, and twigs from trees and shrubs. They’re often spotted near water but tend to avoid humans. One thing they do, like so many other animals, is fiercely protect their young.
Note that although moose attacks are uncommon, they do happen. Alaska sees around 10 moose attacks a year. If a moose does attack you, it will charge. According to this New York Times’ article, you’ll spot it’s about to happen because it’s tongue is out and it’s licking its mouth - trying to pick up scent of what it’s about to attack. In that case, your best bet is to hide behind something - whether it’s a rock or tree, or whatever else you can find. The moose really wants you to go away and is unlikely to chase you far.
Lake Placid: A Moose-watching hotspot
Though rare, spotting moose is more likely in Lake Placid, which has been named one of the best small towns in the U.S. to see these creatures by destination guide The Travel. Surrounded by lakes and forests, Lake Placid and nearby Saranac Lake are ideal destinations for sighting the towering twig-chompers.
Moose on the move: encounters beyond their range
Why do moose sometimes appear far from their usual habitats? As these giants roam in search of food or new territories, their paths occasionally intersect with human settlements—particularly as urban expansion encroaches on their traditional ranges.
Plan your moose adventure in Lake Placid
If you’re planning a trip upstate, Lake Placid offers a chance to see these iconic creatures in their natural environment. Just remember to keep your distance and respect their space—moose are not only one of New York’s largest treasures but also some of its most remarkable wildlife.
