Update:

It’s probably not too controversial to suggest the United States is going through a somewhat challenging period, whether it’s issues linked to immigration and deportations, tariffs, or politicians being assassinated in cold blood. By comparison, a drop-off in tourism feels like a less serious problem, although it’s one which could have a devastating impact on Americans working in the industry.

Why is the tourism industry New York struggling?

Per a video report carried out by CNN, the tourist industry in the United States is expected to make a loss of $12.5 billion in 2025. The reason is simple - international tourists are avoiding the United States.

Some, of course, are being forced to because of Donald Trump’s reissuing and expansion of the controversial 2017 travel ban, which currently affects 19 countries. It has been reported another 36 could be added.

NYC braced for huge fall in visitors

New York is expected to be particularly badly hit. ‘The Big Apple’ has long been a dream destination for travelers worldwide, although it is losing some of its stardust. NYC has forecast a 17% fall in international visitors for 2025, which has many people working in the industry, including Renee Rewiski, worried about their future earnings.

Rewiski runs Tours By Foot, offering historic walking tours around the centre of the New York. She told CNN that last May, she averaged 20 people on a tour. Fast forward 12 months, and that figure had dropped to just six.

“People are losing their jobs in New York”

“A change of attitude toward tariffs,” is the main reason Rewiski gives for international tourists staying away from New York and the U.S. “I’m not sure what we can do. I’m not sure how to change the attitudes. But just now, people are losing their jobs in New York.”

According to the guide, it’s a trend that has been especially noticeable in the last few months, which suggests things are likely to get worse before they get better again.

“Near the end of May, I had only one tour booked for June. I’m used to working three days a week, two tours a day. Up until a couple of months ago.”
