One of the most unfortunate names in history: this couple decided to name their baby after a terrible tragedy
A baby shower invite went viral for all the wrong reasons as Reddit users noticed the shockingly inappropriate name choice.

When it comes to baby names, the bar for “unique” just got buried under radioactive rubble. A pastel-colored baby shower invitation, shared on Reddit’s r/tragedeigh by user kittysogood, has ignited a wave of online disbelief – not because of the balloons, stars, or elephants, but because of the name at the center of it all: Chernobyl Hope.
That’s right. Chernobyl. As in, the worst civilian nuclear disaster in human history. Quick lesson for those who need it:
The name’s Hope, Chernobyl Hope
The invitation, cheerfully inviting guests to “celebrate the upcoming arrival of a little bundle of joy,” failed to acknowledge that the chosen name references a catastrophe that killed scores of people and left thousands more with lasting health issues. The Reddit thread quickly spiraled into a combination of black humor, bewilderment, and outright anger.
“If I were a guest at that shower and heard that name, I’d have a total meltdown,” wrote one user, while another deadpanned, “I guess it’s a nuclear family.” The jokes, though dark, were mixed with comments from those who seemed to have found the choice deeply offensive.
One commenter, born sick due to in-utero radiation exposure from Chernobyl, called the name “repulsive.” “What a legacy. Naming someone after something that has left people cancerous,” they added, referencing the lifelong damage caused by the 1986 explosion.
And yet, under current U.S. naming laws, there’s nothing stopping anyone from calling their baby Chernobyl. It’s legal, if not necessarily advisable.
