Update:

As the manhunt for the suspect who shot two Democratic Minnesota leaders continues, leaders from around the country are reacting to the shocking violence.

The attack on the home of former Speaker of the Minnesota House, Melissa Hortman, left her and her husband dead. Before heading to the Hortman residence, the suspect shot State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who have undergone surgery and are expected to survive.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was visibly emotional during the press conference hosted earlier this morning, as he knew the victims personally. As the tragic news spreads, leaders from around the country are sending their thoughts, condolences, and prayers to the families and communities represented by these officials.

Leaders on Capitol Hill respond to the attacks

US House Minority Leader Hawkeem Jefferies described the attacks as “disturbing” and said that he was “praying hard for the victims and all who have been affected.”

Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar posted a lengthy message following news that the Hortman couple had been killed. "Melissa was a good friend and we started in politics at the same time and were always there for each other," wrote Klobuchar.

US House Representative Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, said Rep. Hortman “showed her how to lead with passion and integrity.” The Congresswoman also said that she was praying for Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were targeted as well, but have survived their critical injuries.

Gun rights advocates call attention to Rep. Hortman’s dedication to reducing gun violence

Shannon Watts, one of the founders of the gun safety advocacy organization, Moms Demand Action, focused her messages of support on the legacy of Rep. Hortman regarding efforts to reduce gun violence. The advocate highlighted Hortman’s leadership in passing a 2023 law to require background checks on all gun sales.

“It should not be lost on anyone that Minnesota Rep Melissa Hartman, who was shot to death in her home last night by an assassin, was a gun safety advocate who worked tirelessly to protect her constituents from gun violence,” wrote Watts on X.
