Pet spending gone wild: You’ll question these cat and dog owners’ sanity when you see their veterinarian bills
Mischievous furry friends can get themselves into some serious problems resulting in painfully expensive trips to the vet.
The internet is full of videos of pets getting themselves into all kinds of predicaments. While they can be hilarious to watch sometimes the mischief can result in a trip to the veterinarian and a sizeable bill to pay.
Recently a Reddit user asked netizens “what is the weirdest or most expensive thing your pet has ever done that made you question your sanity as a pet owner?” The post has received numerous replies since it went up in early May.
Insane vet bills
Many of the respondents to the Reddit post shared that their costly vet visits were the result of their cat or dog ingesting things that they shouldn’t; couches, foam rubber, stucco, etc. This necessitated in some cases surgery to remove the object, work that cost into the thousands, as well as lingering health problems and ongoing treatment, and more medical bills.
I spent at least 24 grand on my dog over the years. Every bit of my savings went on vet bills. She was diabetic, had insulin injected twice a day, blind, neurological problems and had an eye removed. Even when your pet is well-behaved, pets can fall ill and suffer costly diseases. On average, dog owners spend around $214 for a routine visit to the vet and cat owners $138.
There is pet insurance to help cover some of the cost. These policies typically run $44 for dogs and $30 for cats.
