Hormel Foods Sales LLC, based in Minnesota, has issued a recall for two Planters products manufactured at one of its facilities and distributed to five southeastern U.S. states due to a potentially fatal contamination of listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Which walnut products are contaminated? In what states?

The affected products, Honey Roasted Peanuts and Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts, were produced by Hormel for Planters at a specific facility before being sent to Publix warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina, as well as Dollar Tree warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.

Who can be affected by the affected nuts?

Following production and distribution in April, Hormel identified the possibility of contamination with listeria monocytogenes in the packaged contents. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can lead to severe, sometimes deadly infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

What are the symptoms of having eaten the contaminated foods?

Short-term symptoms of having eaten the contaminated nuts include things such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In the worst case scenarios, listeria infections can also cause pregnant women to have miscarriages or stillbirths.

As of yet, the company involved have said that nobody has been reported as sick due to the ingestion of contaminated products. If you choose not to dispose of the products, a replacement or a full refund will be given if you return the products to the store.

Hormel said that “our commitment to food safety remains our utmost priority. A full investigation is currently underway to determine the potential source of the contamination.”
