Should you try the Caveman Method? Here’s what dermatologists say about TikTok’s latest viral skincare trend
A new social media trend has got the internet ablaze but experts are warning about the risks.

The cosmetics industry in the United States is big business. Forbes recently estimated that the beauty industry generates around $94 billion per year for the US economy, employing 4.6 million people in 2023.
But while it remains a booming sector, a new viral trend on TikTok argues for a more ‘low-effort’ alternative.
In a world with an ever-growing variety of cosmetic options, the ‘Caveman Method’ is a skincare trend that involves doing nothing to your skin. Completely, absolutely, nothing.
That means no face wash, no cleanser, no moisturiser. In fact. not even water is to be used to cleanse the skin. Some creators have racked up million of views with their Caveman Method videos, claiming that it’s the more natural and more skin-sensitive option.
Does the Caveman Method work?
Those making the videos have claimed that this ultra-natural approach has various benefits for the skin. But does it stand up to expert analysis?
Skincare expert Dr Janis Covey spoke to HerCampus about the strange new trend and poured cold water on many of the claims made in the TikTok videos, but did confirm that the sentiment isn’t entirely false.
“The touted benefits include allowing your skin to rebuild its natural protective barrier by avoiding over-cleansing and harsh products,” she began. “Another potential advantage is that, by not stripping away the skin’s natural oils, your skin may begin to regulate its own oil production more effectively over time.”
But she was adamant that the complete ‘no-cleansing’ rule goes too far and will likely have negative effects in the long run. She warned that many people would “experience a worsening of common skin concerns, such as acne and clogged pores” without a gentle cleanse.
“Without regular cleansing, dirt, sweat, and environmental pollutants can accumulate on the skin’s surface, potentially leading to infections or exacerbating existing conditions.”
Instead, she recommends limiting the chance for bacteria to transfer to the face and increase the chance of breakouts or other blemishes. Her advice is: “Stay makeup-free to minimize pore blockage, change your pillowcases frequently, and avoid touching your face to reduce bacterial transfer.”
