Snow alert in California: These are the areas affected where travel will be “very difficult to impossible”

The National Weather Service has issued two Winter Storm Warnings. They will be in effect until 10 pm Saturday. Meteorologists warn that along with heavy snow, wind gusts could be up to 50 mph.

Here are the areas affected by the Winter Storm Warning:

  • 8 to 24 inches expected, locally higher over peaks for Coastal Range and Shasta County mountains above 3,500 feet.
  • 1 to 3 feet expected, locally higher over the peaks for Southern Cascades and Sierra above 5,000 feet.
    • Moderate to heavy snow is forecast for the above areas to begin on Friday and continue through Saturday night. The heaviest snowfall will occur Saturday during the day.
  • 12 to 18 inches expected for Upper San Joaquin River, Yosemite NP outside of the valley, Grant Grove Area, Kaiser to Rodgers Ridge, Kings Canyon NP, and Sequoia NP.

Travel conditions will be hazardous and in some cases “could be very difficult to impossible,” cautions the National Weather Service. “Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick.” Travelers are advised that the gusty winds could bring down trees.
