Netflix’s Stranger Things has become a megahit in large part due to its Gen-X nostalgia. The sci-fi-horror adventure show has brought back the looks and sounds of the 1980s and once again has sent a hit song from the era back to the top of the charts.

After seven years of dropping hints, Winona Ryder finally got her way with the inclusion of Kate Bush’s song “Running Up That Hill” in the show. The song is featured in the premiere episode of Season 4 Volume I which dropped 27 May. Seven of the nine chapters are currently available, with the last two scheduled for release 1 July in Volume II.

Kate Bush was Winona Ryders hero

“Running Up That Hill” was released in 1985 on Kate Bush’s album “Hounds of Love”. At the time, the song peaked at 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the English singer-songwriter’s first chart hit since 1978. Generation X icon and Will’s mom on Stranger Things told USA Today that Kate Bush was a “hero” of hers when she was growing up and that she’s been “obsessed with her since.”

After the premiere of the latest season of Stranger Things, “Running Up That Hill” shot up to No. 1 on the iTunes chart according to Deadline. Previously, the show revived interest in “The NeverEnding Story” by Limahl, the theme song to the 1984 hit fantasy film by the same name, with searches for the music video spiking by 800 percent after Season 3 was released.

“Running Up That Hill” plays an important role for Max Mayfield

It was through Ryder’s pushing that the song was included in Season 4, “For the last seven years [I’ve] been dropping hints on set wearing my Kate Bush T-shirts,” she said. Just as Kate Bush’s music was a comfort to Ryder in school, her 1985 hit will play an important role for Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) in Season 4 of Stranger Things in a struggle she will face.
