Supermarket mistakenly orders 38,000 bananas instead of 380 kilos; now it is distributing them among the island residents
A spokesperson for the supermarket said the chain had only intended to order about 838 pounds, or roughly 3,200 pieces of the fruit.

Residents of the Scottish island town of Kirkwall recently found themselves in an unusual situation. Severe weather often prevents basic food supplies from reaching the island by ferry, which is an essential mode of transport for the local community.
When those conditions persist, grocery store shelves can start to run low. But one Tesco store on the island ended up turning the situation on its head.
As one of the main supermarkets serving the island’s population, the store became responsible not only for supplying residents, but also for distributing thousands of bananas across the archipelago after a major ordering mistake.
According to a Tesco spokesperson, the supermarket had intended to order about 3,200 bananas, equal to roughly 838 pounds of fruit. Instead, store employees were stunned when the ferry delivered 380 wholesale boxes containing 100 bananas each, according to UCV Radio.
In total, the shipment brought 38,000 bananas to the store, nearly 12 times the original intended order. Under normal circumstances, excess goods are returned on the ferry and sent back. But this time, that was not possible. Storm conditions had become too dangerous for ferry operations, meaning all 38,000 bananas had to remain on the island.
“Local redistribution”
Bananas can typically last up to a week at room temperature, and as long as 15 days when stored in the refrigerator. Even with that shelf life, Tesco saw little chance of selling such a massive quantity of bananas to the island’s residents before they spoiled.
The Tesco spokesperson said that due to the unusually large banana delivery for their Kirkwall superstore, colleagues invited local schools and community groups to collect the fruit for local redistribution.
Other nearby Scottish islands are also receiving part of the shipment. Tesco worked to ensure that all 38,000 bananas were distributed throughout the archipelago and surrounding islands to keep the fruit from going to waste.
Although the strong winds battering Kirkwall prevented the ferry from taking the extra boxes back, they did not stop the bananas from being shared across different parts of the Scottish archipelago, reaching schools and community centers.
