For many households in the United States, Survivor season has long been a way to bring the family together... forty-three seasons later, the excitement is still there!

The 43rd season will premiere on CBS tonight at 8 p.m. The season was filmed from 2-27 May 2022 in Fiji - the destination for the last eleven seasons. To reduce the risk of covid-19 infection among the cast and crew, this season, like the two before it, only consisted of twenty-six days of filming. Previously contestants, known as ‘cast-aways,’ were sent away for thirty-nine days.

Why Fiji?

Fiji is a ten-hour flight from Los Angles International Airport, making it a prime location for reality television when producers need a beachy, remote, or tropical location. The relatively short flight and ease of access to remote parts of the island make shooting the competition show much easier than in some of the previous locations.

According to Fiji Film, the film commission for the country, Survivor was the first show to return after the pandemic. Films Fiji chief executive Ramiro Tenorio, noted that what Fiji is able to offer does not compare to other tropical locations.

It’s very easy for productions to find the infrastructure that they need.” Additionally, Tenorio touted the role that the country’s commercial airline and navy played in keeping the cast, crew, and public safe while Survivor was being filmed in 2021.

“By the end of the show, they hadn’t lost a single day of production,” said Mr. Tenorio, thanks to the support of these other organizations and agencies.

Jeff Probst, the host of the show, is also a big fan of Fiji

Once Jeff has spoken, the decision is final: Fiji it is.

In speaking with Entertainment Weekly in 2017, long-time host, Jeff Probst said, “Fiji offers us everything that we want.”

“Incredibly beautiful water that you can see down 30 feet, beaches that are amazing, a government that is working with us, local labor that loves to say ‘Bula!’ every day because they’re just happy you’re here. And our crew has never been as happy. We actually have decent accommodations to do this show out in the jungle. It’s a win-win-win.”
