Some New Mexico residents are receiving a payment of up to $1,000 as part of a tax refund. According to the state Department of Revenue, this money is being provided as economic relief in the face of rising prices for food and other essential goods. The measure aims to help the neediest families cope with rising inflation and alleviate their financial situation.

“Commodity prices remain high across the country,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “Our state is in fantastic financial shape today, and it’s important to me that New Mexico families share in that success.”

Who is eligible for a refund of up to $1,000 in New Mexico?

To be eligible for the tax refund, you only need to have filed a 2021 personal income tax return before May 31, 2024 and not be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.

Payments are being made automatically, depending on each taxpayer’s situation. No application is required. According to official information, payments began to be issued at the end of June, so you can still receive the money if you meet the eligibility criteria.

The maximum amount to be received is a one-time payment of $500 for single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately and up to $1,000 for married couples filing jointly, heads of household and surviving spouses.
