Tesla unveils its first kids’ bike, and it’s affordable, stylish, and already sold out

Against all expectations, Tesla’s first bicycle isn’t electric. In fact, it doesn’t even have pedals. Instead, the company has introduced a balance bike for children, the ideal first bike before graduating to a pedal-powered model. Featuring a sleek, futuristic design with a minimalist aesthetic, Tesla’s new Balance Bike for Kids has been an instant hit, selling out just hours after its release.

Priced at $225, the bike is currently available only through a waiting list. It is recommended for children 2 to 5 years old weighing up to 77 pounds. While Tesla does not list the bike’s exact weight, it is designed to be exceptionally lightweight thanks to its magnesium T-frame. Magnesium is about 33% lighter than aluminum, while remaining only slightly heavier than carbon fiber, the lightest material commonly used for bicycle frames.

What is a balance bike?

Many children learn to ride on a traditional bicycle equipped with training wheels, but experts generally recommend starting with a balance bike instead. As the name suggests, these bikes are designed to teach one essential skill above all else: balance.

Balance bikes have no pedals, no training wheels, and no drivetrain. Instead, children propel themselves by pushing off the ground with their feet. Because the frame sits much lower than a conventional bicycle, young riders can quickly place both feet on the ground whenever they feel unsteady, making the learning process both safer and more confidence-building.

Balance bikes are typically recommended for children 18 to 24 months old, while traditional bicycles with training wheels are generally intended for children 3 years and older. Once a child has mastered a balance bike, transitioning to a pedal bike is usually quick and easy. By that point, they have already learned the most challenging part of riding a bicycle, maintaining their balance, allowing them to focus solely on pedaling and steering.
