Hannah Herbst, a student from Florida, amazed the international scientific community with an outstanding school project. In 2015, at just 15 years old, she designed a prototype that generates electricity by harnessing the natural movement of ocean currents. Even more impressive, the device cost only about $12 to build because it was made from inexpensive, recycled materials.
The idea for the invention came from letters Hannah exchanged with a pen pal in Ethiopia. After learning that her friend lived without running water or electricity, she set out to develop a practical, low-cost solution. Her innovative project earned her first place in the prestigious Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge that same year.
Recycled materials and creative thinking
One of the most remarkable aspects of the device is its simple design. Hannah built the prototype using a plastic tube fitted with a propeller produced on a 3D printer. The propeller is connected by a pulley to a small hydroelectric generator, allowing it to capture the energy of moving ocean currents. As the current turns the propeller, the motion is transferred directly to the generator, producing clean, renewable electricity.
The first real-world tests took place in a coastal canal near her hometown, where the prototype performed exactly as intended. The force of the moving water successfully powered several LED lights without any technical issues. Hannah estimated that a larger version of the same device could charge batteries or even power desalination pumps in remote communities.
Although the invention began as a school project and its impact remains limited for now, Hannah’s work demonstrates that innovative solutions do not require multimillion-dollar budgets or massive infrastructure. Her small generator is proof that creativity, determination, and a desire to help others can pave the way toward a future in which clean, affordable energy reaches the people who need it most.
