The largest aerial predator appears in the UK, sparking a frenzy among experts
A group of photographers finds a white-tailed eagle in Norfolk, in the Cley Marshes nature reserve.

A group of photographers recently spotted a white-tailed eagle at the Cley Marshes Nature Reserve in Norfolk, England, setting off a wave of excitement among bird experts and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
The sighting took place last week, when the group encountered the massive bird of prey, which can reach a wingspan of up to about 8 feet. Those lucky enough to see it described its size as “hard to believe.”
“It’s a moment people won’t forget”
Its appearance in the area is highly unusual and quickly caused a stir throughout Cley. “Everyone was talking about it. It’s a moment people won’t forget,” Jane Crossen of Sheringham told the BBC. As soon as the photographers spotted the eagle, they rushed to a hide to try to capture it on camera.
“It was a joy to witness the number of gasps of amazement we were getting from people all around the reserve,” one of the photographers said. “The Norfolk Wildlife Trust visitor center was also packed, and the views from there must have been spectacular.”
Sighting marks another step in recovery efforts
The white-tailed eagle, also known as the sea eagle, disappeared from the United Kingdom in the early 20th century due to human persecution. In the 1970s, Scotland imported white-tailed eagle chicks from Norway, and today, according to the BBC, there are around 130 breeding pairs in Scotland.
Although the species has been gradually reintroduced, its presence is still limited. For that reason, every sighting marks another step forward in the long-term recovery of the species. It also provides a boost to tourism and the local economy.
“This release represents a major opportunity for the Isle of Wight to expand its ecotourism market, generating wealth and jobs in the local economy,” said Theresa Villiers, former Environment Secretary.
Since the eagle was reintroduced to Scotland, especially on the Isle of Mull, the local economy has reportedly gained about $6.6 million (£5 million) per year.
