The megacomplex of 5,000 apartments where 20,000 people live without any need to go out
Originally planned as a luxury hotel, Regent International now functions as a sci-fi-style vertical city, with everything residents need under one roof.

The Regent International apartment complex in Qianjiang, China, is a structure that demands attention – and analysis. A colossal building that looks straight out of a science fiction film, it was originally conceived as a five-star luxury hotel. But today, it stands as a vast residential complex that’s home to some 20,000 people – a number more typical of a small town than a single building.
What amenities does Regent International have?
The monolithic structure is self-sufficient by design, meaning residents have nearly everything they need within the complex and rarely need to leave for basic goods or services. Designed by Alicia Loo, Regent International houses around 5,000 apartments and includes supermarkets, schools, medical centers and hospitals, gyms, and more.
Many describe it as a “miniature world” – an all-in-one living space that combines brutalist and modern architectural styles. From above, the building forms an S-shape, snaking across the Qianjiang skyline.
In addition to communal areas where residents can socialize, the complex features commercial zones with shops and restaurants. The apartments themselves are high-end and vary in size. The building draws heavily on renewable energy, using solar panels and a rainwater collection and recycling system.
Security sound but concerns over mental health
Security is also cutting-edge. Residences are equipped with biometric access controls and advanced surveillance systems.
Still, not everyone sees it as an urban utopia. Some experts have raised concerns about the potential impact on residents’ mental health. Despite the convenience, such all-encompassing environments may foster a sense of isolation that can take a psychological toll.
