The Perseids will light up the sky in August: experts have said which nights and where it will be best to observe them
Look to the skies to see two spectacular meteor showers this month. Here’s how to watch it unfold in the US.

Skywatchers across the United States are in for a rare treat this week: two meteor showers: the Alpha Capricornids and the Southern Delta Aquariids are peaking, and they’re putting on a dazzling display.
While both Perseids are visible worldwide, they’re especially vibrant in the Southern Hemisphere, with prime viewing in places including Australia and southern Africa. But don’t worry, there will be plenty of action in North America- as long as you know where to look.

Cascade of meteors raining through the night skies
The Alpha Capricorn meteor shower, which is known for producing very bright meteors (up to five fireballs per hour), is active annually from July 3 to August 15. This year, the phenomenon was expected to peak between Tuesday 29 and Thursday 31, although it will remain visible up until Wednesday August 13.
The Southern delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks the night of July 30 into the early morning hours of July 31. These faint meteors are more difficult to spot - especially if the Moon is visible. So it’s best to view them when the night sky is not illuminated by the Moon.
If you have missed the Southern Delta Aquariids during their peak last week, don’t worry as they can still be seen until Wednesday August 13.

The best places to see the Perseids
It’s best to find a remote area well away from city or street lights - in the countryside for example. The meteor showers are visible in the early hours of the morning so be well prepared with a sleeping bag, warm blanket, coat and something to sit down on.
