Chi-Chi’s is set to return to the United States.

After 20 years of having closed the doors of its last restaurant, the Tex-Mex chain will reopen its branches, this time under the direction of Michael McDermott, son of one of the founders.

Since Chi-Chi’s shut down its last location in 2004, the brand has been kept alive by marketing salsas, chips and margaritas, which are available in supermarkets across the U.S., all under the Hormel Foods line.

According to a press release, Hormel Foods and Michael McDermott have reached an agreement to use the Chi-Chi’s name for new restaurant openings.

The locations, the total number of which has not yet been disclosed, will be open to customers in 2025. With this merger, Chi-Chi’s plans to reinvent itself as a brand and reposition itself as a leader in Tex-Mex food.

“The nostalgia for Chi-Chi’s is undeniable. We’ve seen how our brand has impacted families across the country, and we believe this is an opportunity to return with an experience that combines the best of the past with a fresh approach,” McDermott wrote in a separate statement.

“I still have fond memories of my childhood at the Chi-Chi’s restaurants that my father built over the course of his career, instilling in me the passion and determination to pursue my own career in the restaurant industry,” he said.

Chi-Chi’s, co-founded by former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee, first opened its doors in 1975.
