At the beginning of next week, just over seven million Americans are scheduled to receive a benefits payment from the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA).
Who gets paid by the SSA on June 1?
On Monday, June 1, beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income scheme (SSI) are due to be sent their monthly money for June 2026.
Who qualifies for SSI payments?
A benefit with 7.3 million recipients throughout the U.S., SSI is aimed at low-income, low-resource individuals who are over the age of 65 or have a disability.
Unlike the SSA’s Social Security program - which sends out retirement, disability and survivor benefits to around 71 million Americans - eligibility for SSI is not dependent on a recipient’s employment record. It is a purely needs-based benefit.

How much are monthly SSI benefits?
- Average payment per person: $738.22
- Maximum individual payment: $994
- Maximum couples payment: $1,491
- Maximum essential-person payment: $498

How does the Social Security Administration pay benefits?
- Direct deposit
SSI beneficiaries can supply the SSA with their bank details by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting a Social Security office.
- Direct Express
Benefits can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal payments. Sign up for Direct Express at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
