The tallest skyscraper in US won’t be in NYC: where will it be and how big will the building be?

The Freedom Tower in NYC is currently the tallest building in the US. But if developers have their way the title will pass to another in an unexpected city.

The new tallest building in the US is coming to an unlikely city

The Freedom Tower in Manhattan is currently the tallest building in the United States, and fifth tallest skyscraper in the world measuring 1,776 feet. However, plans are afoot to erect a new supertall tower but not where you would expect it.

Developers at Matteson Capital, a real estate company, had already submitted applications to build a 1,750-foot structure in one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. That would have made it the second-tallest building in the US. But the company announced recently that it wants to add several more feet for a “symbolic height” to honor another historical moment.

The tallest skyscraper in US: where and how big the building will be

The new tallest skyscraper in America will be in Oklahoma City, that is if the developers get their way. The height of the tower will be 1,907 feet, a symbolic gesture to the year that Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th state of the US said the developers in a press release.

The whole of the project, which is being done in conjunction with multiple parties including architectural firm AO, will consist of four buildings. Besides the supertall tower there will be a collection of three other towers, each of which will rise 345 feet into the Oklahoma City skyline.

The development, called ‘The Boardwalk at Bricktown’, will encompass over 3 acres in the city’s Entertainment District and near to several sports venues. The OKC Thunder’s arena, Oklahoma City Dodgers’ minor league baseball stadium and a planned soccer stadium are all in the vicinity.

The Boardwalk at Bricktown will span around 5 million square feet and be mixed use including two hotels by Hyatt, residential units and commercial space. It will also have public spaces with a 17,000 square foot lagoon and water feature surrounded by a boardwalk which together with the other facilites will create “an urban oasis in the heart of Oklahoma City.”

The new tallest skyscraper in the US still needs approval

The original zoning plan submitted to the city for this ambitious development has already been approved. However, the new modifications may require more paperwork than the height variance request made by the developers. Speaking to the Oklahoma City Free Press the public information officer for the city, Kristy Yager, said, “they would need to rezone, not seek a variance.”

“We understand the applicant’s representative is preparing a new SPUD application, which would go to Planning Commission for a recommendation and City Council for a final decision,” she said.
