A trick to easily take the shell off a boiled egg
The secret ingredient? Baking powder - or sodium bicarbonate to give it its chemical name.
Simply add a teaspoon of baking powder to the pan of water as you bring your eggs to the boil. The sodium bicarbonate is a a weak acid which raises the pH level of the water, making the shells come off with less effort. It’s a clever trick that makes peeling neat and frustration-free.
- Add a teaspoon of baking powder to the boiling water and cook the eggs as you normally would for around three minutes.
- Once the eggs have cooked, cool under running cold water, peel as soon as they have completely cooled.
- Alternatively, boil the eggs as usual. Then transfer them to cold water, mix in a teaspoon of baking powder, and let them sit for about five minutes before peeling.
Peel hard-boiled eggs using a glass of water
