These are the new counterfeit-proof dollar bills that will be used in all stores and banks in the country by 2025

The US government works constantly to improve the dollar to deter counterfeiters from being able to print fake money to shore up faith in the greenback.

Upcoming counterfeit-proof dollar bills

Like a game of cat and mouse, the US Bureau of Engraving & Printing (BEP) works tirelessly to improve US Dollar designs so that they are “resistant to increasingly sophisticated counterfeit attacks.” Modern technology has aided counterfeiters to make higher-quality fake money.

There are currently seven denominations of US currency banknotes: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 actively in circulation. On a regular basis new redesigned versions of the iconic greenbacks are released. The most recent denomination to get a makeover was the $100 note that was first issued on October 8, 2013.

No bill is completely counterfeit-proof but the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence (ACD) Steering Committee does its best at deterrence with new redesigns of the denominations. The ACD is comprised of stakeholders from the BEP, the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Reserve System, Treasury and the US Secret Service.

The next denominations that will get a redesign are: $10 (2026), $50 (2028), $20 (2030), $5 (2032) and $100 (2034). “This sequence addresses risk mitigation and counterfeiting concerns,” explains the BEP.

The process of developing new security features in US currency requires more than a decade of research and development explains the BEP. That is then followed up by years of optimization and integration testing before they can be successfully deployed into banknotes.

After which the government must procure any new equipment or raw materials that may be necessary for mass production. Not to mention “extensive acceptance testing to ensure they meet rigorous manufacturing and quality standards at production volumes,” states the government agency.
