This is how much money you would have now if you had invested $1,000 in Bitcoin years ago

The price of Bitcoin has fluctuated over the years. Aside from changes in the market, the cryptocurrency’s price fluctuations have been driven almost entirely by investor sentiment.

Following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, the price of Bitcoin has increased, as a favorable regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies is expected to exist in his next term.

These expectations were supported after the Republican president-elect nominated Paul Atkins to be the next head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Atkins is a well-known cryptocurrency advocate.

Atkins' nomination came on December 4, the day Bitcoin hit a new all-time record. According to financial website Investing.com, on Wednesday, Dec. 4, the cryptocurrency hit a high of $103,719.4. Other websites have come up with various figures, but all are above $103,000.

How much money would you have if you had invested in Bitcoin years ago?

When the price of cryptocurrency performs better than expected, many wonder how much money they would have today if they had invested in Bitcoin a few years ago.

Bitcoin debuted in January 2009. It broke the $1 milestone for the first time in February 2011 on its way to hitting several all-time highs, including on December 4, 2024 when it surpassed $100,000.

Taking into account price fluctuations, here’s how much a $1,000 investment in Bitcoin is worth today if you had invested a year ago, in 2022, 2021, 2020, and 10 years ago. For the calculation, we’ll take into account a peak price of $103,000.

According to Investing.com historical data, if you had invested $1,000 in Bitcoin in 2023, your investment would currently be worth $2,418. For this calculation we took into account the price in December 2023 ($42,589.50).

Meanwhile, if you had invested $1,000 in Bitcoin 2022, your investment would currently be worth $4,454.03, if we take into account the price of December 2022 ($23,125.1).

If you had invested $1,000 in Bitcoin in 2021, your investment would be worth $2,675.42 today, taking into account the price of $38,498.6 in December 2021.

Five years ago, in 2019, if you had invested $1,000 in Bitcoin, your investment would currently be worth $11,017.10, taking into account the price in December 2019 ($9,349.1).

It is important to note that although some profits are huge, cryptocurrencies are speculative and for this year, you could have lost the entire $1,000, depending on when you bought and/or sold it.

Prices change during each day of the year and for this calculation, only the closing prices of the last month of the year were taken into account.
