Dogs have long been celebrated as man’s best friend, but a recent study uncovers why their bond with humans is so profound. Researchers from the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, delved into how the tone and style of human speech influence canine attention and comprehension.
Unlocking better communication with your pet
The study, published in Communications Biology, explored whether speaking to dogs in a high-pitched, exaggerated manner—similar to how we talk to babies—can enhance their responsiveness. Scientists used MRI scans to monitor the brain activity of nearly 20 dogs from various breeds, including Golden Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels, as they were exposed to different speech patterns from both male and female voices.
Key findings: tender tones triumph
Researchers discovered that dogs' brains respond more effectively to a soft, high-pitched tone, particularly when spoken by women. This heightened neuronal response to exaggerated prosody might explain why dogs excel at processing human speech compared to other animals.
Anna Gergely, the study’s co-author, emphasized the significance of these findings in understanding the human-canine relationship. “This helps us comprehend how exaggerated prosody aids speech processing in a non-human species highly attuned to various vocal signals,” she stated.
