Mother’s Day is almost here and if you are looking for a gift that doesn’t require much effort, Chef José Andrés has shared what he gives his wife every year.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day and if you are looking for a gift for your wife or mother that doesn’t require much effort Chef José Andrés has your back. The famous restaurateur and philanthropist shared in a post on TikTok the gift that he gives his wife Patricia every year.
While he gets his from his garden out back, you may have to stop by the supermarket. No they aren’t flowers, but instead radishes. He gets his crop planted in February so that they are ready when Mother’s Day rolls around because “She loves the radishes,” Andrés tells viewers.
The short video has Andrés speaking about his radishes giving people a close-up look at his harvest as he plucks them out of his garden planter. When viewing, however, you may notice that these are not the cherry belle variety that you typically see in the supermarket. Andrés has instead grown an heirloom variety called French breakfast radish.

How to prepare French breakfast radish
The French breakfast radish has crisp texture and slightly sweet taste. As the name implies, this variety of radish originates from France.
The heirloom variety is a traditional snack, often enjoyed placed on top of butter, spread on a baguette. You can also top them with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
Riviera Produce Corp notes that “the French breakfast radish pairs exceptionally well with sharp and creamy cheeses such as feta or goat cheese, creating a delightful combination of flavors.”
These radishes are also very versatile and you can bring out different flavors and textures when they are pickled, sautéed, or braised.
What is special about French breakfast radishes?
Nicole Burke at Gardenary, French breakfast radishes are an excellent type of radish to begin with if you want to grow your own. She had had a streak of bad luck growing “the easiest thing to grow ever.”
But she hit pay dirt with this variety that has “skinny taproots that fade from the most beautiful shade of reddish pink to white at the very bottom.”
You can get a decent yield from a small space as well. She says that because the French breakfast radish has such thin roots, less than an inch wide, “you can really pack these radishes in your raised beds,” and they are “container-friendly” having roots that only grow 3 to 4 inches long.
Furthermore, they grow fast. From the time of planting to enjoying the “delicate peppery flavor” of French breakfast radishes, you just need to wait between 28 to 30 days. And to boot, they are particularly high in vitamin C notes Healthline.
