Update:

Human engineering is always moving forward, trying to push the boundaries, turning pipe dreams into reality and ultimately making life simpler for humankind.

Originally conceived as the Overseas Railroad by industrialist Henry Flagler in the early 20th century, what is now known as Seven Mile Bridge was a bold and ambitious project designed to connect the Florida Keys with the mainland.

Flagler, co-founder of Standard Oil, invested millions of dollars from his personal fortune into the railroad, driven by his vision to make Florida a prime tourist destination and Key West a strategic trade port, especially with the construction of the Panama Canal. VisitFlorida writes that he spent $30 million of his own money to lay track as well as hiring 4,000 workers for the small fortune of $1.50 a day.

Despite massive challenges, including three devastating hurricanes and the deaths of over 100 workers due to everything from heatstroke to snake bites, the railroad was completed in 1912 and hailed as the “eighth wonder of the world.”

Today, the Overseas Highway is both a vital transportation route and a scenic marvel. Key stops along the way include Key Largo, known for its diving spots and the Christ of the Abyss statue; Islamorada, with its museum documenting the railroad’s history; and the legendary Seven Mile Bridge, a feat of marine engineering. At present, the total length of the bridge sits at 35,862 ft or 6.79 miles (10.93 km).
