This is the reason why Canada can win the trade war against Trump: “We are the biggest customer of the US”
Canada is not taking Donald Trump’s threats lying down and is prepared to go toe-to-toe with US in the developing trade war.
Since returning to the White House for a second term as president, Donald Trump has been ruffling US trading partners’ feathers by imposing tariffs and threatening to impose more. The move has sparked a what the Wall Street Journal has dubbed “the dumbest trade war in history.”
Currently, there is a 25% tariff on imports on all steel and aluminum into the US as well as certain goods from Canada and Mexico. Additionally, he slapped a 20% tariff on Chinese goods. All three countries as well as the European Union have retaliated with reciprocal tariffs of their own on American goods.
Canadian foreign minister thinks Canada can win trade war with US
Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, speaking to the BBC, has expressed confidence that her nation will come out on top in the trade war triggered by Trump’s tariffs.

“We have the most leverage in the world when it comes to the US,” she told the BBC’s World Service Weekend. “We are the biggest customer of the US. We buy more from the Americans than China, Japan, the UK and France combined.”
She says that her government believe that in the end though, it will be the US citizens themselves who will help Canada win by bringing an end to the trade war “because they’re the ones that can send a message to their lawmakers.”
“We can win the hearts and minds of Americans, because ultimately they’re the ones paying for this,” she explained. To aid in the effort, Canada is launching an ad campaign in 12 Red States with huge billboards along major highways.
“We need to send a message to the American people for them to understand what is at stake because this is really going to hurt their livelihoods and have an impact on their wallets,” Joly told CNN’s Pamela Brown. “And my message to hardworking Americans is please talk to your senators, talk to your House Representatives, to your mayors, to your governors, send the message that you don’t want these tariffs.”
