Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has long been known to be a proponent of artificial intelligence, and he now predicts it will be transformative for everyone within the next five years.

In an interview with CNN, he said that although there are fears about how AI could displace people in the workforce, the technology would also provide opportunities in terms of the creation of new types of work.

AI to create both fear and growth

Speaking to the media outlet, Gates said, “As we had [with] agricultural productivity in 1900, people were like, ‘Hey, what are people going to do?’ In fact, a lot of new things, a lot of new job categories were created and we’re way better off than when everybody was doing farm work.”

He said that the rise of AI will have the same effect.

The billionaire is one of the biggest shareholders of Microsoft, which has a multi-billion-dollar deal with OpenAI.

Gates cites the assistance that the technology can provide the health profession, by easing the load of doctors in terms of the paperwork they have to deal with.

He says that AI can help make that aspect of their job more efficient, freeing them up from the the kind of work that they generally don’t like to do.

Gates also pointed out the possibilities that OpenAI’s ChatGPT has opened up, as the technology is “almost like having a white collar worker to be a tutor, to give health advice, to help write code, to help with technical support calls.”

Artificial Intelligence to change the global economy

The tech mogul’s optimism, however, is not shared by the International Monetary Fund. According to the lender organization, artificial intelligence will affect 40% of jobs all over the world.

The IMF has indicated that it is crucial for countries to create safety nets to minimize the impact that the technology will have on the most vulnerable workers. This would include politicians providing protection against the possible widening of socio-economic inequality that AI could bring about.
