This new law, from July 1, holds backseat passengers accountable: cash fines for anyone who forgets in Virginia

In Virginia, you can now get fined just for sitting in the backseat without buckling up. Thanks to a new rule known as the Christopher King Backseat Law (House Bill 2475) all adults must wear seatbelts in the rear seats... or risk a $25 ticket.

What is the new Virginia seat belt law?

The law, named after a young man who died in a backseat crash while unbelted, tightens what was previously a gray area. Before, adults lounging in the backseat were often off the hook, even as drivers and front-seat passengers faced penalties. But now, if you’re over 18 and unbuckled in the back, you’re fair game for enforcement.

It’s not just a symbolic gesture. Police can pull a car over if they spot a backseat adult without a seatbelt – this is a primary offense, meaning they don’t need another reason to stop the vehicle. And while $25 might not break the bank, it’s still a clear financial nudge to get people to click in.

Supporters argue it’s about time laws caught up with what safety experts have said for years: the backseat isn’t magically safer. In fact, unbelted backseat passengers can become deadly projectiles in a crash.
