Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, and his first speech as Commander-in-Chief provides insights into the political vision that will shape his agenda for the next four years.

Until the administration gets to work, it will be difficult to predict which policies he will prioritize. Since Trump’s political persona is fueled by bravado, distinguishing between threats and actionable items remains challenging. For instance, when it comes to tariffs, the specific scale and implementation of these taxes remain unclear.

The speech seemed focused on “unity” but the president still left space to attack his political enemies and feed his base. We will form a society that is color blind and merit-based,” argued the president, who also added that in the US, there are only two genders: “male and female.”

The speech offered some details about the executive orders the president signed and their potential implications for the country.

Donald Trump’s immigration agenda

The President committed to declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border. “All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens to where they came from,” said the president. He added that he would end “catch and release” and deploy troops to the southern border to “stop the invasion.” Under an order signed today, he also designated cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, further complicating the federal government’s definition of what this designation means and the danger those that fall under it present to the American people.

Energy and climate policy - “Drill baby drill”

In addition to immigration, the president announced that he would declare a “national energy emergency,” blaming high energy prices—along with excessive government spending—for the inflation crisis that has strained household budgets in recent years. The GOP, however, overlooks the fact that petroleum production in the United States reached record highs under President Biden, a reality that failed to endear him to climate change advocates.

President Trump also proposed the establishment of the “External Revenue Service,” which he claims will collect taxes from foreign entities he argues are exploiting American consumers. However, he provided no specifics on the level of tariffs he plans to implement.
