"A good day for democracy"

It was a good day I think for democracy and I think it was a good day for America. Our democracy has been tested in recent years, but with their votes, the American people have spoken. They’ve proven once again that democracy is who we are.

Trump acolyte Lauren Boebert trailing Democratic challenger

Incumbent congresswoman Lauren Boebert is at risk of becoming a one-term US representative. The race for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District is coming down to the wire with the freshman lawmaker, who has supported Trump’s election fraud claims, is trailing her Democratic challenger Adam Frisch by 62 votes.

Tallies are still coming in from two counties, Pueblo and Mesa which will decide the final result of the race. Pueblo went strong for Biden in 2020, while Mesa plumped overwhelmingly for Trump.

Democrats defied all predictions in midterms, but not Michael Moore's, almost...

Typically a first-term president's party gets a shellacking in the midterms, and even more so if Americans are worried about the economy. However, despite the common wisdom and predictions of doom and gloom Republicans failed to make any major gains in the House and the Senate could remain evenly split between the Republicans and Democrats with the two independent Senators that vote with them.

There was one person though who had faith that the Midterms wouldn't be the drubbing that all expected, Michael Moore. In the run-up to the 2022 elections he's been publishing daily posts about why he forecasted a "Blue Tsunami", while that didn't come to pass either, he's still happy with the results, for now.

"I love how you all knew that if for some reason we couldn’t create a blue tsunami on Election Day, our second best choice was to make sure there would be no red wave," he wrote in his most recent post. "And that is where we are at as America wakes up on The Day After."

It's time for GOP to "turn the page" on Trump

The Republicans were expecting a "Red Wave" on Tuesday but there was barely a ripple. Control of the House of Representatives is expected to go to the GOP but the Senate is still a toss-up.

Much of the failure of the party to make more traction comes down to the quality of candidates that former president Trump endorsed. In races for the Senate where polling had the Democrats and Republicans tied only one candidate with Trump's backing has won, incumbent Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin squeaked across the finish line.

So far none of the Trump-backed candidates for the House in toss-up or lean-Democrat races have been successful in their bids to win elected office.

Georgia’s Republican Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan says "it's time to turn the page." reflecting on the results should be a "pivot point" in his opinion for the GOP. "I think Donald Trump is moving from a movement to a distraction for the Republican Party now," he said.

The key Senate battleground is once again Georgia while an election quirk means the result won’t be known until December, and not for the first time.

2022 Midterm Elections: Republicans projected to take control of the House of Representatives

Nearly 24 hours after the first polls closed in the 2022 midterm elections, neither party has yet managed to guarantee a majority in either the House or the Senate. Election experts have warned that it could take days or even weeks for some races to be called.

But so far it appears that the "Red Wave" that had been predicted was just a ripple, here's a look.

What is a runoff election and which US states could use them?

When no candidate in the initial election achieves the necessary level of success, a runoff election is held to choose a winner. Both primary and general elections have the option of having runoff elections.

Georgia and Louisiana require runoff elections when no candidate obtains a majority of the vote in a general election. It has been confirmed that neither Raphael Warnock or Herschel Walker, Georgia's two Senate candidates, have reached the 50% threshold and will have to go to a runoff.

Here's the process for the Georgia runoff election...

What is a runoff election?

Georgia is one of a small number of states in the US that requires candidates to reach the 50% threshold to be crowned the winner. Analysts have confirmed that neither Sen. Raphael Warnock or GOP challenger Herschel Walker are going to secured at least half of the vote, meaning that the Peach State's all-important second Senate seat will be subject to a runoff election on 6 December.

CONFIRMED: Georgia Senate race goes to a runoff

Just as he did in 2020, Georgia Senate candidate Raphael Warnock will have to win a runoff election if he is to be the state's representative in the Upper Chamber. Georgia rules dictate that the winner must reach 50% of the vote and neither Warnock nor Republican challenger Herschel Warnock will reach that threshold.

When will the Georgia runoff election be held? Local officials have confirmed that the all-important vote will take place on 6 December.

Arizona Governor, House and Senate Race | Who is in the lead?

There are few gubernatorial races in the country that can boast a candidate with as much name recognition as Arizona's Keri Lake, the former Fox News host turned Trump-endorsed candidate. Lake is facing Katie Hobbs, who has served as Secretary of State of Arizona since January 2019.

Here's what we know so far...

Dr. Oz concedes to John Fetterman

Earlier this morning the Pennsylvania Senate race was called in favour of John Fetterman, the Democrat who suffered a serious stroke earlier this year.

Throughout the build up to the election there has been concern that GOP candidates may not concede, following in the footsteps of Donald Trump after his defeat in 2020, but that has not been the case in PA. Reports suggest that Dr. Oz called Fetterman at 9:30am to concede the race.

2022 Midterm Elections: What do the results in the Senate and House of Representatives mean for Biden?

President Biden must have feared that his party would suffer substantial losses, as incumbent Presidents often do in their first term in office. However the Democrats have fared better than expected and retain hope of keeping a slim majority in the Senate.

Here's what the midterms mean for the next two years of the Biden presidency...

Will Laura Broebert keep her seat in the House?

Candidates from the Trump-aligned MAGA wing of the Republican Party have not fared particularly well in the midterms, despite predictions of a red wave of GOP votes. Incumbent Rep. Laura Broebert appears to be on track to lose her seat after a single term in office, as Democratic challenger Adam Frisch holds a two-point lead with the vast majority of the votes now counted.

2022 Midterm Elections results in Michigan: who won the Senate, House and Governor races?

Michigan Governor and Senate Race | Who is in the lead?

State governor Gretchen Whitmer has won re-election in Michigan but her margin of victory has narrowed in comparison to her 2018 victory. Evers' victory denies GOP control in Wisconsin

In one of the more consequential races of the 2022 midterms, incumbent Democrat Gov. Tony Evers held on to his place in Wisconsin. In recent years the local Republican Party had tightened their grip on a state whose voters are split 50-50, but where the GOP controls local politics.

Trump'endorsed candidate Tim Michels had promised to prevent the Democrats winning a Wisconsin seat ever again if he won election, but Evers' win was confirmed late last night.

Fetterman celebrates victory in Pennsylvania Senate race

During the course of campaigning for the 2022 midterms, more than $340 million was spent on a single race; the all-important Pennsylvania Senate election. John Fetterman, a Democrat, was facing Trump-backed former TV star Dr. Oz for the swing state's second Senate seat.

Fetterman's early polling advantage appeared to be slipping away after he suffered a stroke back in May and struggled during the one televised debate last month. However Fetterman pulled through and was crowned the victor in the early hours of Wednesday morning and thanked his supporters for helping his campaign.

When will the Georgia runoff election be held?

Last year the Democrats sealed control of the Senate in two dramatic runoff elections wins in Georgia, and it looks like the balance of power in the Upper House could once again be decided in the Peach State. Georgia law ensures that candidates must secure a majority of the vote to be declared the victory and it does not look like either incumbent Sen. Reverend Raphael Warnock or GOP challenger Herschel Walker will reach that threshold.

The Georgia Senate runoff will be held on 6 December if neither candidate reaches 50%.

2022 Midterm Elections results in Arizona: who won the Senate, House and Governor races?

Many are biting their nails as they follow the races in Arizona... many polls had shown a GOP blowout in both the governor and senate races but Democrats are outperforming all expectations.

In the race for governor, Katie Hobbs (D) holds a slight lead over Kari Lake (R), the Trump-backed election denier and former TV host. Lake has already been raising doubts over the legitimacy of the election... a strange move considering there is still plenty of room for her to win it all.

On the Senate side, Sen. Mark Kelly (D) holds a six-point lead over Blake Masters (R), but the margin is narrowing as the hours pass.

Democrats are showing similar strength to Biden in 2020, which is a positive sign, but with thousands of ballots still to be counted, it is either parties race in Arizona.

2022 Midterm Elections | Races to follow: Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock race too close to call

Georgia could be critical to Democrats and Republicans in determining which party controls the Senate... the question on everyone's mind is whether or not Warnock can scrape out a majority above fifty percent. If not, the race heads to a run-off election that will be held on 6 December.

Currently, Warnock holds a slight lead over Herschel Walker, but election officials in the state are forecasting that a run-off will be necessary. Read our full coverage to catch up on the ins and outs of this competitive race.

Fetterman flips Pennsylvania

John Fettterman, who continues to recover from a stroke, narrowly defeated Trump-backed Dr. Oz. Polls had put the race in a dead heat, with some even favoring Oz as the election approached.

Dr. Oz's loss is another example of a Trump-supported candidate who could not win. Around the country, many more extreme Republicans failed to beat Democrats; meanwhile, more traditional GOP candidates like Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis managed to win re-election.

Nevada Governor and Senate Race | Who is in the lead?

As a state that depends on tourism as one of its main sources of revenue, Nevada was badly hurt by the pandemic. Additionally, the inflation crisis has wrecked the state, leaving Democrats vulnerable to GOP challenges.

Senate

Adam Laxalt (R): 418,461 | 49.9%

Catherine Cortez Masto (D - incumbent): 395,866 | 47.2%

This is the state of the race, with seventy-five percent of the vote counted. However, the majority of mail-in ballots from Clark County, which tends to favor Democrats, have yet to be counted. The Cortez Masto campaign hopes these votes will allow her to regain her lead over Laxalt.

Governor

Joe Lombardo (R): 423,547 | 50.6%

Steve Sisolak (D - incumbent): 383,835 | 45.8%

At this point, Republican Joe Lombardo has taken the lead over Gov. Sisolak, with seventy-two percent of the vote counted. There is still room for movement in this race and the winner may not be announced until this weekend.

Hello and welcome to AS USA's live blog following the results and fallout of yesterday's US election.

Those waiting for a "red wave" may be disappointed with Democrats outperforming the polls all over the country.

The biggest news of the night was the victory of John Fetterman over Dr. Oz, flipping the seat from Republican to Democrat, giving Dems a better chance to maintain control in the Senate.

Races remain too close to call in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Wisconsin. Results should be expected throughout the day, but many states may not be able to declare a winner until this weekend.

In Georgia, the Secretary of State, the office that oversees elections, expects the race between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker to go to a run-off that will be held on 6 December.

The news is not all positive for Democrats. In Florida, Marco Rubio and Ron DeSantis easily beat their competitors, showing that Florida is moving more to the right. Additionally, in Ohio, JD Vance defeated Congressman Tim Ryan, with Mike DeWine also willing his re-election. Lastly, in Texas, Greg Abbott was elected to a third term as governor, ending Beto O'Rouke's gubernatorial bid.
